Ways You Can Search
To make it easier to find the exact policy or policies you need, Highmark
has implemented a search feature. There are now two ways to search for a pharmacy policy.
- You can search for policies which contain particular words, phrases, numbers, or codes.
- You can browse all policies in a particular category (e.g., Formulary, Managed Rx Coverage, Prior Authorization, Quantity Level Limits).
The keyword method searches only the body of policies which are available on-line.
The reason code method searches only the reason code field of policies which are available on-line.
The policy number method searches only the policy number field of policies which are available on-line.
The browse method searches only the category field of policies which are available on-line.
The Search Results Page
When you enter search criteria in any of the ways described below and select the Search button,
all policies which match these criteria will be returned to you on the Results page. When the keyword result page
is first displayed, the entries are sorted by category in alphabetical order. When the reason code and policy number
result page is first displayed, the entries are sorted by policy number, in alphabetical order. When the browse
result page is first displayed, the entries are sorted by policy topic, in alphabetical order.
If you wish, you can change the order in which they appear on the page:
- To arrange the entries in alphabetical order by policy category, click on the Category heading.
- To arrange the entries in alphabetical order by policy title, click on the Policy Topic heading.
- To arrange the entries in Effective Date Begin order, from the most recent to the least recent, click on the Effective Date Begin heading.
- Once in Effective Date Begin Order, to arrange the entries in reverse Effective Date Begin order, from the oldest to most recent, click on the Effective Date Begin heading.
- To arrange the entries in Effective Date End order, from the most recent to the least recent, click on the Effective Date End heading.
- Once in Effective Date End Order, to arrange the entries in reverse Effective Date End order, from the oldest to most recent, click on the Effective Date End heading.
1. Search for Policies By Term
The first section of the Search page allows you to search for policy which contain a particular
word, phrase, code or number. Most standard Internet rules apply to searches in the Pharmacy Policy
file. Here are a few to remember.
Limit the Search Range
To make your search productive and efficient, you will need to limit the range of information
you wish to view. You will need to select a policy category, key in a
term and click on the button for the appropriate term type.
For example:
To display all Formulary pharmacy policies referencing the word beta,
you would select and enter the following information:
Category (select from the drop-down box): |
Formulary |
Search Term (key): |
"beta" |
Search Type (click on button): |
Keyword |
You will notice that the default Search Type is policy keyword. If you want to search
by policy reason code or policy number, be sure to select that option by clicking on the
appropriate button.
Searching for Exact Words, Phrases, Codes, or Numbers
If you know the exact word or code you want to see, surround that term with quotation
marks ("XXX") For example, if you wanted to view policies including the word
beta, you would enter "beta" as the Search Term.
The search engine will return to you every policy it can find which matches that term
exactly.
Searching for Multi-Terms
If you would like to search for multi-terms, separate the terms with a comma
(term1, term2) For example, if you wanted to view policies including the word
growth and hormone, you would enter growth, hormone as the Search Term.
The search engine will return to you every policy it can find which matches either term1 or term2
exactly.
When You're Not Sure How the Word is Referenced or Spelled
When you're not sure how the term you're searching for is referenced in the policies,
or when you are not sure how it's spelled, you can enter part of the word or code,
followed by an asterisk (*). When you do this, the system will return to you all policies
including words or codes which begin with the letters or numbers you entered. For example,
if you entered the Search Term beta* , the system would return every policy
it can find which includes words beginning with beta - such as beta
and beta-blocker. (Notice that you wouldn't use quotation
marks in this instance because you don't want the system to seek an exact match to the term
you entered.)
Searching for Policy Numbers
When searching for a policy by policy number, you don't need to capitalize the letter,
and you don't need to enter a Category. To search for the policy J-12, you
could enter either J-12 or j-12. Either would work. (It would not work,
however, if you left out the hyphens.)
2. Browse Policies by Category
This selection presents a listing of all policies available in the category you select from
the list. If you select a category which contains a large number of policies, you
may need to scroll through multiple pages of listings.
